French Atlantic marine area: a pilot area for IUCN categories assignment

The French Atlantic area has been chosen as the pilot area to ascribe IUCN categories to a first batch of French MPAs. Within a national process of IUCN categories assignment, a partnership between the French IUCN Committee and the French Marine Protected Areas Agency (Agence des aires marines protégées) launches the process in 2012 for the marine protected areas.
Almost all French designations are present in the French Atlantic area. The MAIA GIS database will make the expertise work of assignment easiest as it gathers detailed description for all MPAs : standards data and information relative to / management issues (information synthesized in the MPA data sheets on the MAIA web site).
The « Water and Biodiversity » department of the French Ministry in charge of Ecology will officially validate the assignment, assisted by an advisory council.
The final assignment of IUCN categories for all MPAs of the French Atlantic coast will be presented during the 1st Conference of Marine Protected Areas of the Atlantic arc, organised within the framework of the MAIA network, which will take place in Arcachon (France) from 3 to 7 December 2012.
