BIOMEX
Assessment of BIOMasse EXport from Marine Protected Areas and its impact on fisheries in the western Mediterranean Sea.

The objective is to investigate the efficiency of Marine Protected Areas as sources of biomass. The main objective is to assess the export of fisheries-related biomass from MPAs to surrounding areas. Development of a project restricted network; establishing a steering committee, an editorial committee and a website; and establishing a training committee and planning training of partners involved in various techniques; elaboration of protocols and tools for MPA's staff, recommendations for Mediterranean MPA policies.
  2. Measurement of gradient of biomass across MPA boundaries using underwater visual census techniques.
  3. Measurement of gradient of biomass across MPA boundaries using underwater visual census techniques.
  4. Measuring the gradient of abundance of eggs and larvae across MPA boundaries and modelling the surrounding oceanography to estimate the export of potential recruits and their area of influence
  5. Use of experimental fishing to quantify MPA adult export
  6. Survey of distribution of catches and effort around MPAs.
